Jurisdictional requirements

Many of our customers have inquired about the current requirements in regards to obtaining a permit. Below you will find the general requirements for each jurisdiction.

BALTIMORE

Typically, the city of Baltimore will only approve full road closures for weekend work.

ALEXANDRIA

The city of Alexandria does not allow work to be performed prior to 9:00am, or after 6:00pm, unless a noise variance permit is applied for. They do not allow any work to be performed on Sundays. They require a certificate of insurance.

ARLINGTON

Arlington County requires police assistance for extensive closures. Work is only permitted from 9:00am to 6:00pm and they also require a certificate of insurance.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY

Montgomery County typically takes 2 weeks for approval once the project has been submitted. Work is allowed between 9:00am and 6:00pm. They also require a certificate of insurance listing Montgomery County as a certificate holder.

CITY OF ROCKVILLE

The City of Rockville generally takes three weeks for approval from the date the project was submitted. They also require a certificate of insurance with the City of Rockville listed as a certificate holder. In addition, they do require a bond, with the amount to be determined once the project has been submitted. They also require the owner's information and signature on the application.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

Most closures must be approved by the Fire Marshal, however lane closures do not have to be approved. The approval process will take 7-10 business days from the date of submittal. Once the Fire Marshal has approved the traffic control plan, the project is then submitted to TSA.

After hours permits are required for any work being performed before 7:00am or after 7:30pm. They are also required for any work that is to be perfomed on Sundays. Currently, the District of Columbia is requiring a letter on company letterhead, from the ANC for approval. After hours permits take 1-2 days to process.

Applying for permits

The best way to ensure that your Traffic Control Plan and Permit is correct is to fill out a permit work order entirely and email it or fax it to our office. The more detailed information you can provide, the better. Please include your email address on the bottom of the work order so we can notify you of the status of your permit.

Once we receive your work order, Traffic Engineering Services needs one day to do an onsite visit to your project (for measurements, number of lanes, parking meters, etc.), a second day is needed to draw the traffic control plan, and a third day is required to package and submit the project.
